He knew....If you look at his eyes that he flashed at the Dr (right after his lines about living as a monster )., He was telling his Dr. that he knew..and made the choice to go.

Both of you read what Leo said correctly.....You got it. (Think about it, why would he say that to his "Partner"...it is something he would say to his DR....He knew & the Dr. knew too because he called after him as Leo walked away..
