On Fred Johnson and your question about whether or not they know about him being “the butcher of Anderson Station”, it was referenced in such a way that they do. They said something about his questionable history and it being about 10 years ago.

The amount of "things" in the world-building in season one, and just being dropped into what is kind of like a fully realised universe, took me a while to catch up with. I think feeling slightly overwhelmed for half/most of season 1 is a common thing, but you're handling it far better than most. Once everything is painted in, and everything clicks into place, it all pays off.
