THE NILSEN TAPES

Yeah, at the opening, I noted that Nilsen's speaking voice was far softer than David's portrayal at times. Nilsen was from much further north than David. But occasionally during his out bursts, David's accent did slide into southwest to my novice ears.

That was quite informative. The diminish responsibility factor should be their for those that are genuinely affected. As truly limited that has to be. The system warps that in the apparent search for a perceivable defence. I can't see any rational person, other than Nilsens appointed defence, being able argue he in any way fit that criteria. Neilson created that situation because of his plea. The majority saw through it and found him guilty. I knew a very troubled young man through my work in the medical sector. An addict on a course of appointed daily treatment. Somewhat harmless to most, polite and quite unassuming compared to others on the programme. In and out of hospital for short periods due to his metal illness. Which could well have been schizophrenia, but I don't know for sure. He was in great need of help and I don't feel the system was best equipped to help him a lot of the time. His pleas for help, albeit anecdotal perhaps didn't go unheard. Unfortunately one day, on a day I working in the town. He murdered an elderly gentleman in the shop next to where I work by stabbing him to death. Then proceed to roam through the town centre wielding the knife he had taken from the shop. He was apprehended and arrested and did go to prison rather than a hospital. I don't know the circumstances of his trial, but had he gone to a hospital, I wouldn't have found that a unreasonable conclusion to the awful situation that lost that man his life. I can have sympathy for both in that horrendous tragedy, maybe because I knew him. But equally he was guilty of the crime and I can also see that justice was served.
