Destiny uses FTL (Faster Than Light) drive. As Rush said the ship is on autopilot and it's programmed to drop out of FTL when it comes to an Earth-like planet where one of the robot ships that went ahead of it has built a Stargate, stay for a few hours for whatever reason, then leave and move on to the next.

Knowing some lore stuff would definitely enhance the watching experience. You get enough to follow things sufficiently. It's clever because there could be two types of viewers, and how they mirror the group. The civilians / new recruits and the scientists / military. All are totally new to this particular situation. But one side have varring degrees of knowledge established over about 15 years of discovery and experiences that make them better informed to handle and understand the situation better.
