The Y2K 'bug' was a real concern, with a lot of work done to mitigate it. The reason was that a lot of software (particularly older software) stored dates with two digit years (because RAM and disk space was limited and expensive), with the presumption that the century would always be 19 - therefore when the year rolled over to 2000, the software would think the year was 1900. Incidentally, the next date 'bug' is in 2038 🙂
