This comment is a little late but I wanted to talk about Sam. Ask yourself this. Why do Sam and dean do the hunter life. Sam has always hated the life. He constantly wanted a normal life and ran away to get it before the start of season 1. So why did he return to it? For revenge for his girl's death. I think i commented before about this. Sam motivations have never been about just doing the job. He has always had a reason to return to being a hunter every season. Jess death, honoring John wishes, saving Dean, avenging dean, redemption, it's what his family is doing. So without his family then Sam doesn't hunt. It's exactly in character we are just so use to him having a REASON.
