This whole storyline hurts me so much! You're right that Klaus definitely feels guilt and responsibility for his siblings with Mikael hunting them. I mean, why else would he continue to dagger them all. Yes, part of it is control and anger, but a lot of the time it also seems to be to protect them, out of fear of Mikael using them to get to him and hurting them in the process. Like, not only would he feel responsible because Mikael is hunting him, but also as the hybrid. Like, he's not the oldest, which is who usually feels that responsibility (like Elijah, though he's not actually the oldest of course...) but he is the hybrid. He can't be daggered, he'd feel like he has that responsibility to keep the rest of them safe from what hurts them but not him. And of course, he killed Esther, which is part of where Mikael's hatred comes from (which is bullshit tbh... He hates Klaus because he's not his son, yet he also hates him for killing the woman who cheated on him) so he would feel a lot of responsibility for everything, because all of Mikael's hatred is directed at him, and although the majority of it was something he couldn't control, there was that one part that he could, which is killing Esther. To me, I feel that one of the things that hurt Klaus the most about the whole thing is that he mourned Marcel after this. He mourned the loss of his son, and he blamed himself for the whole thing. Meanwhile, it was Marcel himself, and Rebekah, who called Mikael there, causing the whole thing, and Marcel had survived the whole thing too and never reached out to let him know he was alive. We saw him find out back in TVD 4x20 when Agnes told him that she didn't break Marcel's rules, that was how he found out that his son was still alive. Then he finds out that Marcel had been one of the people to bring Mikael to town and then he took that opportunity to take the city from him. (Don't get me wrong, I love Marcel and I understand his actions, but Klaus is my favourite and so I'm of course gonna talk more about him...) The whole thing would just seem like some elaborate scheme. After all, Klaus is the one who raised Marcel, he taught him everything he knows, he said it himself, he made him in his image. So Marcel learned Klaus' tricks and knows how to plot pretty well. And Klaus is paranoid enough as is. I honestly think that before he found out that he was still alive and hadn't told him, Marcel was one of the few people Klaus truly trusted. Like, yes, he was unhappy about his relationship with Rebekah, but at the end of the day, he seemed to truly trust him, and it didn't seem that he was ever really paranoid about Marcel plotting against him. Their relationship honestly makes me really sad, because it's one of my favourites of the TVDU, but it's so broken. I wish we got more flashbacks to when Marcel was a child, more of Klaus raising him. I would've liked to have seen more of how he was with him as a child. But I have a feeling that part of the reason they didn't have as many as I would've liked is because of the relationship between Rebekah and Marcel. We know that Rebekah was present in his childhood, we know that she likely helped raise him in some way. But seeing it would make it more real, more uncomfortable. Whereas keeping it to a bare minimum almost lets us forget that Rebekah is basically his Aunt. (Yeah, I have a lot of feelings about their relationship... It DOES make me uncomfortable, even with the whole vampire thing that kinda changes the rules. It's just very incest-y and predatory in a way... And I do love Rebekah, it's just that it makes me very uncomfortable. And it's weird, because in a way I actually do root for them as a couple at times.) But yeah, I really do wish we could've had more moments of young Marcel with Klaus. Because their relationship, like I said, is one of my favourites and it's so interesting. There's just so much missing. As for Rebekah. That realisation that she basically let him continue to believe he was at fault for his sons death and her heartbreak, when she knew otherwise, that probably hurt him a lot. Like, we see in that scene Rebekah says it's her fault and then Klaus immediately tells her it wasn't her fault and that it was in fact his fault, and he clearly feels awful about it, and Rebekah just let him continue to believe that. That's an added weight to his already terrible grief and it's so unfair. Also, he was obviously terrified when he realised Mikael was there. Mikael completely destroyed him that night. Like he said, he took the last part of him that felt human (I believe that part had a lot to do with Marcel...) and created the completely feared Klaus Mikaelson. Yes, he was already a monster, but he'd still had some humanity left in him, he had people who actually seemed to respect him rather than just fear him, he'd built something amazing, and things were actually looking up for him. Then Mikael showed up and took all of that from him, took his son, his city, and with it his humanity, and then came the Klaus who just used fear to get everything because the respect had already failed. It's really sad, realising just how much he lost that night all because Rebekah and Marcel wanted to be together. (Again, I understand where they were coming from and I do love them and I know there's more to it than that... But that honestly is the gist of it, and also all Klaus can see right now...) That scene with Klaus shouting out for Rebekah, walking through the cemetery, and Mikael calling out for them in the past. It really hurts. That sorta thing always hurts me, parallels between Mikael and Klaus. Because although I definitely believe Klaus is so much better than Mikael, I do recognise that there are quite a few similarities in them, and it makes sense. It makes sense that he would channel the person who's caused him the most fear when trying to scare people. Even unintentionally. Mikael is his example of someone who can cause absolute terror, part of him is going to copy that at times subconsciously. And of course, his pain and anger towards Rebekah is blinding him to the fact that if he's not careful, and if he doesn't take a step back and change his behaviour, he's going to end up like Mikael, and that's the last thing he wants. So, it was shortly after they fled New Orleans that Klaus and Rebekah met Stefan. Elijah was busy drawing Mikael away, and they met Stefan. And I think it kind of makes it more understandable why Klaus didn't kill Stefan or try to separate him and Rebekah like he did with everyone else. They'd just gone through something awful, he'd watched her lose Marcel, and he'd lost Marcel too, and so he wanted to give Rebekah a break, let her have some happiness. The scene with Elijah and Mikael is so good though! "You are a fool without equal" is just one of my favourite insults from any TV Show... Haha But Elijah clearly being unhappy with the way Mikael is talking about Klaus, then stating that he'd always choose Klaus, especially over Mikael. I get what you mean about Cami. I like her, but you're right that she's basically always psychoanalysing Klaus. While I enjoy it most of the time, and definitely see that Klaus needs it. It can also get kinda annoying. Like, sometimes when he opens up about things, he doesn't want some analysis of him as a person and what that caused, he just wants someone to listen and understand that it caused him pain, or that he has emotions that are valid. Yes, her trying to convince him not to kill Rebekah was good and he needed her to tell him not to and that it was a bad idea, and he does need that often. But sometimes he really does just need a friend rather than a Therapist. The whole blessing thing just breaks my heart every time though... Like, you're totally right in that they shouldn't have needed to wait for Klaus' permission (even though their relationship is totally weird because of both their relationships to him...) but yeah, if they'd just waited a little longer, they all could've just been happy. And of course, that just makes it all much worse to Klaus, because he gave his blessing and was happy for them, and yet they'd already betrayed him because they didn't think that would ever happen (understandably so...) As for the whole thing about the difference in how Klaus ran the city and how Marcel did. With Klaus sharing it with all the species, and bringing them all together, and Marcel banishing all the species but vampires and humans. It makes sense though. Klaus is half werewolf, they're his kind, he's going to be drawn to them and he would want to connect with them and give them something. But Marcel was trying to protect Davina from the witches. Very excited for the next episode, as I love it! <333
