The thing with Elijah is, he looks at Klaus and still sees his little brother from 1000 years ago. The innocent boy who he grew up with. And I think he feels guilt at not being able to stop him from becoming who he did. He just wants his brother back. :( And yeah. Klaus is rather complicated, yet so simple. He clearly wants people to love him, he wants family and love. But it terrifies him because he's paranoid all the time and so the thought of those he loves betraying him is the worst thing he could imagine. Also, gotta love that he could easily just kill Marcel. He had so many chances. He could've bit him instead of Thierry, but he didn't. It's partly a power play, he wants to take the city back from him without killing him, but he also clearly cares for him. He's just got such toxic views of love... And the thought of caring for something as defenceless as a baby must be terrifying for him. Like, he loves his siblings, but they're immortal like him, so the thought of losing them isn't really there. (Poor Kol and Finn... Though he was clearly upset by Kol's death...) He kind of grows to care about some vampires (like Caroline, a few others too...) and while they're not as safe as he and his siblings, they're less vulnerable. But a baby. He'd have that fear of the baby getting hurt, killed, because he has so many enemies, some of which wouldn't hesitate to kill a baby. That's a weakness to him. Something that people can use against him, as is already happening... It's really kinda sad... (Also, poor baby already being used as a bargaining chip! And poor Hayley being a pawn in this whole thing too... She didn't ask for any of this. She had a one night stand with someone she believed couldn't get her pregnant, and then ends up tangled up in Mikaelson drama... I feel awful for her! Haha)
