One of my favorite things about this movie is that Sean Connery doesn't even try to do a Russian accent. He is so good that you just accept that he's from the Soviet Union. He plays a Spaniard in Highlander, and still has his Scottish accent. When it's Sean Connery, you just accept certain things, like being Harrison Ford's dad in the Indiana Jones movie, despite being only 12 years older than HF. He's just that freakin' good.

What I love about these Jack Ryan movies is that they are very realisticI think this is one of Alec Baldwin's best performances. I would say it's a shame that Alec Baldwin didn't continue in the role, but he was replaced by Harrison Ford, so it's hardly a disappointment. HF did 2 movies, then was replaced by Ben Affleck , who did 1 movie, then Chris Pine took the role. That's just the movies. John Krazinski plays him on the Amazon series. So there's a lot of Jack Ryan content out there, and it's all pretty good stuff. Like the James Bond movies, the Jack Ryan films are pretty much self contained but do have some of the same supporting characters. For example, James Earl Jones appears in both Harrison Ford movies .

Ah, the '80's. I remember them well. They were my 20's.

The close up was to indicate that they're still speaking Russian even though we'll hear English from now on. No more sub-titles.

The man Sean Connery kills was the "political officer" -- the representative of the CPSU (Communist Party Soviet Union) and the real commander of the boat. Political officers were always present and controlled everyone's career.

Just fyi, a "boomer" is a sub that carries nuclear missiles. They are mobile ICBM platforms and during the cold war their initial purpose was so each side would know that if they launched a nuclear strike that wiped out the other side's land based ICBM's, the boomers were still out there, ready to launch a counter strike.

Kelly Parks

A super quiet boomer like Red October would have been a first strike weapon, made to start a war.

Kelly Parks

Not radio silent, just silent. Noise carries underwater.

Kelly Parks

The helo accident is why his friend asks him, "How's your back?" in the beginning of the movie.

Kelly Parks

The underwater shots are well lit so we can see, but in reality there's no light that deep.

Kelly Parks

In the Soviet Union even internal travel required a passport and government permission. Life in a police state...

Kelly Parks

All the officers that met in the cafeteria are there to defect. And the chief engineer.

Kelly Parks

Gunfire inside a sub is very bad. The metal walls means lots of ricochets.

Kelly Parks

The cook was KGB.

So amazing looking back. Not long after this came out the US won the cold war and the Soviet Union was gone. much to everyone's great surprise. Russia is a pale shadow, not able to keep its one remaining aircraft carrier at sea anymore.

Kelly Parks

It was great watching your reaction!

Glad you enjoyed! Thank you for the rec because I wouldnt have watched it otherwise and I really enjoyed it

I read that it was loosely inspired by real events? That in 1975 there was a mutiny aboard The Last Sentry done by the political officer named Valery Sablin. Only the premise is different becuase instead of wanting to defect he wanted to become the leader of the second Russian Revolution. Interesting.

Kelly Parks

Each missile carried multiple warheads, each capable of striking separate cities. In the book Jack Ryan said of being around the nukes, that he felt like he was in the presence of the devil himself.

I didnt even notice his accent to be honest because I was so enthralled with his performance and the plot LOL. But youre right, Sean Connery was such an amazing talent.

nostalgicgirl

OMG I didn't connect that he is the same Jack Ryan oops. I remember watching Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger at one point. Is the series any good?

nostalgicgirl

I cant believe I missed that! That's pretty smart. I remember thinking, why are they speaking english all of the sudden? but I was too concentrated on the story
