"Step on a butterfly.... and fuck everything up....." 🤣 Beautifully poetic. OK. I'll guess one of the places you heard the reference, would be 'THE' time travel show. Doctor Who. Series 3 ep 2, I think. Depending on on how far you went. Pretty sure there's another ref in series 10 ep 3 as well. This was the ending I saw back in the UK when it first released to DVD. I've never seen the alternate ending, didn't know there was one either. This felt both tragically and powerfully beautiful in a bleak, unrelenting and painful way. I understand the need to soften it. Wish they had had the resolve to leave it alone. I never saw the sequels / remakes, whatever they are. I don't imagine they are even close in quality.

okay I had to look up the alternate endings again. I believe it says the original was the "dark" ending that's in this reaction. My bet is that they went with a "softer" ending for theatrical release... and the "dark" version was used later in the Director's cut. There are 2 other happier and an "open ended" version. There are 4 alternate endings. After slightly more research - it looks like there are 3 versions of the theatrical ending and one Director's cut ending.

I think the first version of the butterfly effect for me was - I read a book where they travel back in time to the dinosaurs - and they're supposed to stay on this path(?) and something happens and someone strays from the path - later they find a dead butterfly stuck to the boot. They go back forward in time and things are changed crazily. This seems different from the saying that a month's flapping its wings could create a hurricane on the other side of the world. I think the Simpsons have parodied the dead butterfly on the boot or was it Futurama?
