It’s a Paul month. This time we discuss his 2007 film There Will Be Blood which tells the story of Daniel Plainview, an oilman who leaves a wake of destruction pursuing his need to amass wealth and power. The boys talk capitalism, practical effects, and how Paul Thomas Anderson has matured through his movies.

Only thing that leaves me perplexed in this movie is that HW starts a competing oil company. I feel like he should have become a socialist labour lawyer or something to that effect. Rejecting both captialism of the new America and the religious order of the old America, in order to reject both Plainview and Pauly D. Idk maybe not something PTA would want to convey in his movie at all, but his choice of career is kind of unsatisfying to me. Still a near perfect film regardless

It does seem overly simple to just have "greed begets greed" but again, I imagine it was a time when there didn't seem like an alternative to live up to one's father's ambition. But it's a good criticism. -a

I don’t hate the movie, I quite liked it (far more this second time), but I hate the unheard whisper nonsense when it’s played straight. If you’d endings that the writer never reveals are just socially acceptable mystery boxes (I’m open to my mind being changed, but don’t think it’s likely).
