to me this movie is like the movie clueless or fastimes. the research was taken from a lot of actual hacker cases and the terms were what people actually used (albeit about 10 years prior) and then they used cyberpunk tropes to push the visuals out of the beige machines hacking actually was at the time. Tom is right. the password thing was true then. Character counts were smaller too. the names and references are almost straight out of early william gibson...which I'm sure the people that were interviewed liked. a friend of mine went to alternative school for having virus sourcecode (not the actual viruses) in the 10th grade. it didn't age well but they got a lot of it way right.
