Clickspring: Milling a Fire Piston

There are many ancient techniques that can be used to start a fire. The most well known would be the friction based methods like a hand drill, or bow drill, as well as the percussion based methods like striking flint and steel. Another most unusual traditional method is the fire piston. You're a true artist

Trevor

Great. All I need now is about $50k for the equipment. Probably cheaper to buy some matches and ziplock bag.

Hey Trevor, FWIW most of what I use is very affordable hobby grade machines and tools. For example this fire piston project can be completed on something like a Sherline, brand new $600. You do not need to spend anything like $50k. Cheers, Chris.

best crafting video i ever seen, great!

Grant Johnson

Cool quick project, I could make a couple for Christmas presents...

Ruben vd Merwe

Hi Chris, first time i see this. Very nice and excellent maching as usual. I will make one for sure, and as Grant said, very nice present!

clickspring

Terrific Ruben, be sure to send me through some pics when you're finished :)

Ørjan Fredheim

Wow very nice! Would be handy. What is the weight of it?

Brian Boatright

Would love to see more videos on how you make the cutters. I think you made one a while back but I would love to learn more and see yours process. I assume you are making the tooling from tool steel and grinding it.

clickspring

Hey Brian, I mostly use High Speed Steel that I grind on the bench grinder. I use hardened tool steel for form tools, and other specialist cutters. Will certainly be making more cutters in the videos in future, cheers mate :)

At 0:50 I noticed a yellow dimension in your SolidWorks drawing. I immediately got all twitchy and had to stop myself from trying to fix it with my mouse

Perfection as always Chris! :D

What happened to the beautiful tail stock die holder that you made earlier ?

Ahhh, beautiful work Chris :) Out of curiosity, is engineering a hobby or a profession for you? Engineering and electronics have been my interests and jobs for many years as apprentices and students of each but Nursing is where I ended up. It pays the bills but does not sate the mind - every time I watch one of your videos, I get the itch to invest in a mill and lathe, as they are the two remaining items to complete my workshop. Unfortunately, they have to compete with a new rigol digital oscilloscope I've been eyeing off as well! Please keep up the great work. Your narration and shooting style make perfect educational videos, I am sure you are inspiring many other people!

Hey Jean-Francois, still going strong :) That one was for the little Sherline lathe, but I made this project on the larger SC4. Cheer!

Thanks very much for the encouraging words Deano, I appreciate it. I got a degree in mechanical engineering many moons ago, but much like yourself, life took me elsewhere. It's a hobby now, but also qualifies as a very satisfying therapy! Cheers mate :)

Not sure how this works, but If i wanted to make a run of these to sell at a craft fair, can I send you a royalty?

Another beauty, Chris!! These seem to be the new rave and are simple & elegant...my favorite design strategy...but I'm still and old geezer with Mg/flint. ~¿@ Really Nice touch with the cord cinch and the compass! ~PJ
