Squat toilets are something that really catch new visitors to China by surprise! Sometimes they're actually toilets, sometimes they're just holes in the ground as you can see in the following video, CAUTION don't watch if you're eating!:

The thing is, as you can see in that video, there are no hand holds and no way to support yourself, literally the only way to use that sort of toilet is to perfect the squat! Chinese people have no problem since they're taught this from birth and grow up perfecting it, it's actually a convenient way to rest when there are no chairs around or if you're worried that the park bench is dirty

"Excuse me, can you give me directions to the bathroom?"

"Sure thing, over there!"

It is considered to be fairly low class to squat around in public like this security guard and most middle to upper class people won't do it but it is a common sight on the streets of China no matter which part you travel to.

Be prepared to learn this skill (I still can't do it) if you find yourself travelling through China as even large cities still use squat toilets 90% of the time (Hotels usually have western style toilets).

Can't wait to see you in the next video and as always!

- Stay Awesome!

Is it odd that I kind of miss the squat toilets in China? It was akward at first and I had to learn to use a whole other set of muscles. The worst one I encountered was at a McDonalds where a previous patron had painted the walls and floor with their diarrhoea, the cleanest were the public ones. Also unexpected were the ashtrays in the toilet, I noticed the locals would often use their squatting time to have a leisurely smoke. The first western style toilet I encountered was at my partners sister's house and I noticed all the western toilets in china have the little European style 'poo shelf' instead of a straight hole. Speaking of her sister's house, it didn't have hot water (solar water) so I had to use the local bathhouse which was reminisce of a jail bath https://photos.app.goo.gl/uMxRVr5TVtFAob257 I also only discovered toward the end of my stay that I had been using the squat toilets back to front.
