One thing you learn very quickly upon arriving in China is that ice-water is not okay! First of all you won't find ice in the supermarkets and each time you sit down at a restaurant, a warm or hot cup of tea is what you get.... Visit a factory or office and you'll be given a plastic cup of hot water even if it's a crazy hot day.

I couldn't understand it at first, but it soon became apparent when I started dating Chinese girls, during their time of the month they refused to eat ice-cream or eat/drink anything cold... This really baffled me and when asked, they would tell me that their doctors (and mothers of course) wouldn't let them eat/drink cold things because it would badly affect their health since it messes with their "Qi" .... This was very frustrating at first and so I even sent an email to my mother and sister asking them if there was any truth to this malarkey (maybe it was a secret woman thing that I didn't know) but they replied saying that of course they could eat ice-cream no problem.... Armed with this knowledge I challenged my Chinese girlfriend and colleagues and was met with the "Our Chinese bodies are different from you foreigners' bodies" response which of course to me sounded like nonsense since humans can all drink cold water... what happens in winter when you're in a mountain village and your only option is to drink the runoff from snow? Anyway this is a silly argument and I'm getting off point here. DRINK MORE HOT WATER is something you'll hear over and over again each time you mention that you have a cold, are feeling sick, have the flu or even a very serious disease, expect your work Chinese colleagues, friends, in-laws and even your own doctor wife to tell you over and over again to drink more hot water.... it is the Chinese magical cure all.

Lol, either way my foreign friends and I always poke fun at it but it is 100% taken seriously in China, hot water is a part of any cure/recovery.

Like the cure-all properties of hot water, I'd like you all to as always:

- Stay Awesome

My wife says that she can't drink cold water because it makes her feel sick... like throwing up! And I live in northern Canada! Maybe there is some truth to your story ;-)
