In my headcanon, guarding the cannon was originally going to be Mr. 5 and Ms. Valentine's final mission. Since Mr. 5 is impervious to explosions and Ms. Valentine could just float away to safety. I'm guessing with them out of the picture Crocodile just gave the job to these two morons and lied about how big the explosion would be.

I agree, the sound design in this episode is just awesome. I love the cut to just the ticking with no other audio during Pell's carrying of the bomb. So well done and really emphasizes the moment, as well as his focus. Its also interesting that we get a bit of a better understanding of Luffy's motivations. He's not a hero, he just wants to help his friend and they will fight as long as Vivi wants to fight. This in my opinion helps show the amount of depth in Luffy's character. He's not just some good guy righting every wrong, he is doing things with a purpose and using his own morals.
