This episode is one I enjoy more and more with each rewatch, tbh. There’s a lot of charm in the way Steven interacts with Onion here… we’ve seen the two of them clash before in previous episodes, but it seems that Steven’s found a decent way of communicating with him now, via narration and then gauging his reaction to what he says. Where before Onion was- in many ways- too strange for Steven, he’s come to foster a better understanding of how he operates. And then come the rest of Onion’s gang- another slew of kids that Steven finds it very hard to relate to, at first. (The “whole pantry of friends” joke is funny to me, ahah.) At the end of it all though, I honestly see this episode as a huge test of his people skills and patience in understanding others, and think he comes out at the other side with a nice new perspective on all that.

I’m also a big fan of how this episode highlights Steven’s isolation from other people his age. It’s always kinda been the elephant in the room, but has never been pointed out so bluntly. Beyond Connie and Peedee- who’s always working anyways- the only other youths in town are either many years younger or many years older. Poor guy really hasn’t gotten the best socialization, lol. It really is so nice that Onion and like… say, the Cool Kids… are so welcoming to him anyways.
