Oceangate was so, so weird. Like, I think it's a horrifying way to die and I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but I did raise several eyebrows when I read the details. That man was basically Cave Johnson IRL; you could not pay me enough to get into any kind of submersible he had a hand in creating.

This is the main point that I think they missed. Yes they we're omega rich billionaires, but the reason so many people were making fun of it was because it was so easily avoidable by just looking at the craft. It's the equivalent of jumping out a plane and relying on a crocheted beanie as a parachute. So it feeds into the narrative of dumb rich people. Counterpoint is Kobe Bryant. While not as super rich, still very well off and a big public figure. There weren't jokes about his death (or at least nothing wide spread) because it was a freak accident. It's not just because people are rich. People make fun of people doing stupid things and suffering the consequences.
