Cookie Takeshi Volume 1 (Patreon)

Today’s the 1 year anniversary of the first Cookie book, and as a way to say thanks for supporting me, i'm putting it up on Patreon in its entirety! So, in the event that you hadn’t bought it before now, here you go!

Behind the scenes stuff:

Chapter 1-Into the storm

This was the first real story written for the series back in 2014, and the first page created for it.

Thought up the general concept while a huge rain storm was going on.

There was a cut joke about how Peter could’ve just flown his way to safety. This was before Peter not knowing how to fly/being scared of heights was a plot point.

This is supposed to serve as Cookie’s introductory chapter as well as establish the style for the series, going from comical at the beginning to action focused towards the end.

(It’s a little hard to see, but when Cookie lands the final blow on the storm cloud, his eyes glow green. I just thought that was a cool effect, thanks amphibia.)

Overall Chapter 1 was pretty simple since it’s been rewritten the most times, I already had an idea of how to translate it for the book.

Chapter 2, A Reel Fishy Story

The second chapter written all the way back in 2014 as well, and my go to chapter when telling people about Cookie.

This story is loosely (and I mean loosely) inspired by the Bible story “The greatest fish story ever”

This chapter is supposed to serve as both Peter’s introductory chapter, due to his lackluster performance in chapter 1, and King Buttercup’s intro chapter since he also gets taken out of the action during chapter 1.

This version of the chapter was mainly based of the animated version, which kind of finalized the designs for the characters and look of the world to give it a more 90’s anime feel

Buni’s cameo from the animated version was changed back to Sugar since that how it was originally

Overall chapter 2 was also pretty easy to transfer. Chapter 3 was the real challenge…

Chapter 3, The last dragon.

There’s actually an entire cut chapter that was supposed to serve as Iro’s introduction instead of this one called “Egg Hijacking.” I ended up thinking it wasn’t that good of a way to bring him into the series. Originally I was gonna animate “Egg Highjacking” instead of “A Reel Fishy Story.”

Okay so chapter 3 proper. Already the first challenge was how I wanted the setting to look. I’ve envisioned “Autumn road” (the location it takes place in) since 2014, and getting a look I was happy with was difficult to say the least.

There was actually a bit of a position change with this next part: in the rough draft Cookie asks about Iro’s egg, in the final, Iro states that Cookie isn’t a dragon. More natural that way.

This aside comment from Iro mistaking Cookie for a bear is because 2 times this year, Cookie was called a bear by other observers. Once when I showed him to a group of people who thought he was an “orange bear” and another from a Twitter user who called him a bear a while ago.

The next section was to show that King Buttercup knows a lot more than he lets on/isn’t as dumb as he seems. It’s all just foreshadowing for future events though. (Also Buni cameo)

And I threw in a small reference to Vib-Ribbon in here with Cookie & Peter’s positioning while lying on the floor of their room.
