I think the first time I watched this I was too stressed by it all to take in all the story elements and little details so it was good to rewatch it with you haha. I've seen a lot of people say they think Donna has BPD. Considering it's been linked to childhood trauma it feels very telling that she implies she had a negative relationship with her mother when she tells Natalie that she doesn't want to remember her mother. I feel Natalie saying Donna scared them is really indicative of the cycle of abuse as well. Donna loved her kids and she wanted to do right by them but if she never had any kind of healthy role model in terms of how to parent then it makes it more difficult to do that herself, especially while trying (or maybe not trying) to deal with her own shit as well. Natalie lays it our pretty clearly here how it affected her. I think it's also why she's so protective of Carmy at times, like when she slips the money into his pocket when he's leaving for New York, she probably had to look after him a lot growing up. I've seen people make the point as well that part of why Carmy has so much anger and such unhealthy coping mechanisms is because he never saw healthy ones modelled. All that said though, Donna gets to do what she's always wanted here, to look after her daughter, make her feel better and let her know just how much she loves her, even if she can't always express it herself. That moment at the end as well with the Faks is so beautiful. They're two characters who are often loud and chaotic but in that moment they offer Donna some peace and support by just being there. It's really lovely.
