TAYLOR SWIFT - TTPD (ALBUM REACTION) PT.1

Melody P

Ready For It was the beginning song on Taylor's Reputation Tour...which you reacted to ;) It begins with the Intro with media clips dissing her, then she comes out in black and the show kicks off epically hard!

Daniel Frye

So excited to watch!

Love this album, can’t wait to see/hear your thoughts on it

Shani Gribben

But Daddy I Love Him is aimed at the fans who told her she shouldn’t date Matty Healy who she dated after her 6 year relationship with Joe Alwyn ended, because Matty was a problematic person. The relationship ultimately didn’t last

Shani Gribben

The slammer is a metaphor for her long term relationship that she ultimately felt trapped in

Shani Gribben

The weed or little babies line is kind of referring to the fact that she’s at the age where half her friends are party animals and the other half are settling down and having kids

Shani Gribben

You should totally react to some Florence and the Machine!

Amanda M.

I'm only on the introduction, but the banter with Audrey was perfect. The Ready For It...? And then your "it's 31 tracks, I've never seen a longer album" and Audrey saying "Red"! 😂😂 Found it interesting you took "once I fix me..he's gonna miss me" as an empowering statement - I heard it as a plea, like "I'm broken but once I heal, he'll come back and want me again, maybe?!!!"

KyraB

I don’t love it when people say that all Taylor does is write songs about men. I know and understand your point and perspective was more about empowerment and that Taylor is so much more than any man, which is true, rather than using that perspective to bash her music or devalue her art and talent. However it is a common argument made by those who do want to discredit her and her success. If you go through her entire catalog you will find plenty of songs not about men. Yes will also find a lot that are about men as well. As a self proclaimed hopeless romantic who for the majority of her career has written autobiographical songs from early teens through present day early 30’s as a dating woman I think that is a huge part of her life and as a result naturally part of her music. She has gone on record as saying break up and love songs are her favorite songs to write and that lots of other artists do the same thing but when it comes to her that seems to be a problem. Sorry for the rant I did actually really enjoy your reaction and I know you didn’t mean it the way the people who try tear Taylor down do when they say stuff like that it just triggered a small nerve. By the way I would say Who’s afraid of little old me is about her relationship to the industry and the media and not about a man. Looking forward to your reaction to the second half.

Someone needs to give you a short briefing before Taylor your reviews. Going in completely blind is not fair to you and rather frustrating. Taylor wrote TTPD specifically for herself to help process the ending of a six year relationship & a rebound with a past flame who love bombed then ghosted her.   So, this double album is 90% her processing those events, feelings & repercussions. You would've had a better grasp on the individual songs & the overall narrative. Ideally, you should've been directed to read Taylor's below poem first: At this hearing I stand before my fellow members of the Tortured Poets Department With a summary of my findings A debrief, a detailed rewinding For the purpose of warning For the sake of reminding As you might all unfortunately recall I had been struck with a case of a restricted humanity Which explains my plea here today of temporary insanity You see, the pendulum swings Oh, the chaos it brings Leads the caged beast to do the most curious things Lovers spend years denying what’s ill fated Resentment rotting away galaxies we created Stars placed and glued meticulously by hand next to the ceiling fan Tried wishing on comets. Tried dimming the shine. Tried to orbit his planet. Some stars never align. And in one conversation, I tore down the whole sky Spring sprung forth with dazzling freedom hues Then a crash from the skylight Bursting through Something old, someone hallowed, who told me he could be brand new And so I was out of the oven And into the microwave Out of the slammer and into a tidal wave How gallant to save the empress from her gilded tower Swinging a sword he could barely lift But loneliness struck at that fateful hour Low hanging fruit on his wine stained lips He never even scratched the surface of me. None of them did. “In summation, it was not a love affair!” I screamed while bringing my fists to my coffee ringed desk It was a mutual manic phase. It was self harm. It was house and then cardiac arrest. A smirk creeps onto this poet’s face Because it’s the worst men that I write best. And so I enter into evidence My tarnished coat of arms My muses, acquired like bruises My talismans and charms The tick, tick, tick of love bombs My veins of pitch black ink All’s fair in love and poetry Sincerely, The Chairman of The Tortured Poets Department

This was great! I hope you do more Taylor Albums like this! I think you would really like Folklore & Evermore- which are her folk albums she did during 2020!

Shani Gribben

Red actually has one song fewer than TTPD but because of ATW 10 minute version the album is 8 minutes longer

Melody P

I'm sorry, I should have started by thanking you for taking on this project. Such a long album that isn't even your favorite genre/artist was undoubtedly a daunting task, and certainly took time and effort. It is appreciated.

7deadlybananas

Only in a relatable sense through my own kinda thing. While it’s starts off like more a plea, it turned into just a direction for my own growth to happen from it. I’m just guessing it’ll happen the same way for her.

kellybean

I know you already listened to all the songs but I think a helpful perspective is to not look at these songs as always being about a man but instead as these songs being about her experiences, including in relationships. This album was heavily inspired by two very massive break-ups she experienced that happened back to back and the point is to share her thought processes and feelings at the time and reflections she had later on.

7deadlybananas

Going in blind is part of the process. Personally, I prefer it this way because there’s a real growth involved with getting to know Taylor, her fan base and the intimate details in between that have impacted everyone.

Caitlin Green

I know you said you wished you had some background so I thought I’d provide a little for you At the beginning of Eras Tour Taylor announced her split from her long time bf of 6 years. A couple of months later she was dating another musician from a popular band called the 1975 named Matty….Matty and Taylor actually have history of an on again off again whenever they are both single type of thing dating back to 2014. So here she is leaving this 6yr relationship she thought was going to be the one and jumps directly into something with her situationship. And Matty proceeded to love bomb her telling her how they finally got their timing right and she was the love of his life and making all kinds of promises. It’s also important to note that Matty is highly highly problematic not only in the things he says but he also has a substance abuse problem that he sometimes has under control and other times it controls him, something Taylor thought she could help him with. Due to his public image some of Taylor’s fans created a huge public outcry for her to leave him, going as far as writing her letters and creating petitions about it (sanctimoniously performing soliloquies she’ll never read). Eventually Matty ended up ghosting Taylor last summer sometime around May/June. She described the whole situation as leaving a relationship that was like an oven and jumping into one that was like a microwave during a manic time in her life. And thus The Tortured Poets Department was born. And due to it being a breakup album there are a lot of references to her exs. She has also said this album wasn’t about creating hits or songs for her fans. It was something she needed to make for herself in order to move on from this time in her life.

Danny liked the song Florida a lot so he’ll probably like No Body, No Crime and he’d probably like the song Carolina, which is a single she wrote for the movie Where the Crawdads Sing

Shani Gribben

A cinephile is just someone who loves cinema

Shani Gribben

I love that both you and Audrey immediately thought that the stadium was an Oreo

Shani Gribben

Here’s a list of Taylor Swift songs that aren’t about her romantic relationships https://taylorswift.fandom.com/wiki/Taylor_Swift_songs_that_are_not_about_boys

Shani Gribben

Clara Bow was a film star in the silent era going into the talkie era and her life was pretty rough to put it mildly

Dom Smith Mountain

Who’s Afraid Of Little Me is actually her clapping back at the industry and the media :) Fantastic reaction, I think you’ll vibe much more with the second half !

Amanda M.

"He jokes that it's heroin but this time with an 'e' "-- he's crediting her as the reason they're on winning streak rather than it being some chemical assistance or drugs

Krie

I feel like he would really like folklore

Jaz

Love the reaction! I wanted to say I think sometimes it comes across like every Taylor Swift song is about a relationship even when they aren’t because she’s trying to make it relatable to all. Not everyone could relate to her fame so she makes songs in which she kind of frames fame as a relationship situation like “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”. Even “But Daddy I Love Him”, or “Long Live”. Those are only a few examples but she also does it in “this is me trying” and even “mirrorball”. These songs all have deeper meanings and I think touch on her relationship with fame but she disguises them as just a relationship to be more digestible and relatable.

adeepindigo

Loved your reaction. I think unfortunately this was a break up album of a six year relationship and a loss of the rebound situationship and thus everyone else (critics and fans) were expecting it to be this subject matter, you didn’t know and thus were confused why it was so prevalent. It was clearly a processing album for her. That said there were actually multiple songs that had nothing to do with a guy and were actually metaphorical for the industry or even the fans and you attributed them to a relationship or break up so I think there’s also a preconceived notion, unintentionally of course but we all have biases, that even you expected that to be all she was writing about. There’s plenty of songs not about men, many of which people have already said above, but because Taylor’s a confessional storyteller when her albums are about her experience as a dating woman in her twenties and thirties and so she’s bound to have plenty of songs about relationships. I think it’s just funny to react to a breakup album complaining it’s an album full of songs about her relationship lol. This might’ve been one of those times context could’ve helped set the tone for what this album was meant to be. I definitely think you’ll find the 2nd half more broad and metaphorical and poetic though do be prepared some songs will still be about relationships. It’s a universal human experience and what makes her relateable. I’ve found that women get Guilty As Sin and really gravitate towards it but men for whatever reason don’t like or don’t get or don’t vibe with that song (I’ve seen several reactors now) and it’s been fascinating. I’m curious to see what lines make your list for the 2nd half!

alex ✨

if ur so inclined, i would recommend waiting until all o her taylors versions are out to listen in order, you get a whole nother experience. either way id recommend my top 5 in no order self titled (taylor swift), speak now, red, rep, folklore

7deadlybananas

In part two I go back over my favorites lines throughout the album reaction and give up a top 5 also. 🙌

alex ✨

i didn’t see anyone commenting about this but as a diehard swiftie that was on the trenches during her breakup and following up dating matty healy and people in the fandom wrote an open letter to her asking to break up w matty - that’s what i bet but daddy i love him is about * so ur right bc she did refer to her fans as family once or twice mostly in the past

alex ✨

can i please ask a reaction to cerimonials by florence? her writing is very particular. she also did her version of just a girl by gwen stefani for… the yellowjackets season 2 trailer. its chilling.

Samantha Ubaldo

Yes! I was coming to say the similar thing. She is really good about writing out her feelings about a situation but knowing how to make it relatable by making it about a relationship.

Paula

Great reaction! Thanks for keeping it true to what you feel. I loved seeing what lyrics stood out to you that were worthy of the notebook. In general I love seeing non-swifties reactions when they don’t have context because it’s a reminder of how a lot of people hear it or likely interpret things. I wonder if you will gain an even deeper appreciation to some of the lyric choices you didn’t understand but could tell were intentional as you react to other albums. This album’s songs connect to so many other albums and songs that makes it even more poetic in nature when you see the layers of it all.
