I love slam poetry as well! I’ve tried it out a couple of times. It’s actually a lot of fun, but it can be sort of scary, even for a performer like myself. One has to be willing to be a bit uncomfortable, (at least the first time or two) because slam poetry is like baring one’s soul onstage or memorizing a deeply personal journal entry, and then walking up to nothing but a mic, and reciting it in front of everyone there, so it can leave the poet feeling vulnerable, to say the least. I know some amazing poets who would do very well but are paralyzed by being that open and vulnerable to a room of people. The reason I received as to why the speaker can't utilize props or anything else during the recitation is two-fold. 1) IF it’s a competition, (not just an open mic night) whoever is hosting wants a level playing field for everyone who has entered the contest, and setting a strict rule of no props, etc. just makes it easier for the 5 judges to base their scores off of the predetermined criteria w/out the influence of distractions onstage. That leads me to #2) The poet’s poem must be powerful enough to stick out and stand on its own merit, which is just hard enough for the poets, while also being easier for judges to score. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And the poems are usually intense. I’ve legit cried hearing many poems because of the tone & passion the poet brought to their (usually 3-minute) performance. These people are speaking about some intense, emotionally charged, and raw sh*t. They have to be especially vulnerable to get up there and spill their guts about various taboo or traumatic events in their lives. Most performances I’ve seen cover a variety of social & political issues, but there are equally as many slam poems about remarkably personal issues that the majority of people would probably only tell their psychologist! So it takes a lot of bravery too. I absolutely LOVED this reaction! I had a chaotic, abusive in some ways childhood and teen years, and I witnessed and went through a lot no kid/teen should have to. As I got older, I developed some addiction issues and was diagnosed with Depression, anxiety, ADHD, & CPTSD. I've died twice. One time was “on purpose.” But, I made it! Just like you did! I'm proud of us! We are most definitely here for a reason! 😊 I'm alive, and clean and for the most part, my depression, etc. is being well managed. I have my teaching degree and I am pretty much an open book. I will tell my story, no matter what, if it means just one person learns something helpful and/or meaningful. By the way, I have seen many reaction videos to this song from everyday YouTubers to psychologists who have their own channels where they break down songs and videos like this to everyone in between, and out of the 20ish I've seen over the last 6 months or so, ALL 20 reactors cried at some point during this music video. I think it's brilliant and he is so talented and brave to put this out into the world. I agree…it is slam poetry, add a guitar. I also feel like he’s speaking to a certain subset of people who will, like us, get in our feels about these things. Especially when it ends with a message of hope.
