omg, this is like- dark dark. the way he's losing his mind and just going full impulse maniac mode is devoid of rational thought and just processing of the situation, I don't know how he expects Emilia to just full send her trust for him without any concrete proof or talking about it. I get that he can't share it, but then his actions need to earn her trust and they're just not currently which is very unfortunate.

I just wanted to add some context to Subaru's mindset here from the novels. In the novels this anime is based on, there is about a two month time skip in between episode 11 and 12 where Subaru was simply living at the mansion with everyone. Because he was finally in a state of peace, his trauma from all his deaths started to suface as him having constant nightmares every night. To combat this, he ends up clinging to Emilia as a person as a sort of emotional rock since in all his loops, Emilia is the only person who has always been herself and tried to comfort him. Literally everyone else in the mansion has, at some point in a loop, attacked him, threatened him, or flat out killed him. While he holds none of this against them, since the current versions of them didn't do those things, it still stresses him out. For example, everytime he hears chains clinking, he flashes back to Rem's torture in the woods for a second. Now we hit this story arc and in different ways, everyone, including Emilia to some extent, is kind of telling Subaru that he has no place next to Emilia. At least that's how he sees it. So you have a guy with intense trauma being told he can't have the one thing keeping him from losing his mind. And much of what he's doing is him desperately trying to prove that he does have a place next to her because losing her means losing himself.

This is the episode where everybody started to hate Subaru, well this and episode XXX

One thing to note is that while how Julius comes across and the way he went about it are very questionable. He did Subaru a favour with the duel. The way he insulted the imperial knights so openly could very easily have gotten him killed by someone else. By challenging him and beating him he can put Subaru in his place and allow the knights to save face as opposed to Subaru being killed by some other knight he pissed off.

That argument between Emilia and Subaru at the end of the episode might be my favourite scene in the whole anime. Such well written character drama.

2024-02-18 23:37:06 Ahh see I wasn’t aware of his intentions in this situation. I thought it was to help Subaru learn more about his character and grow

I don’t think I hate him, it’s almost impossible to because the guy keeps going through insanely traumatic deaths
