oh wow. I was told that these two episodes were insane, and they sure as fuck did not disappoint. What the fuck? Thorfinn's episode was riddled with so much imagery that I was actually in shock at how beautifully they depicted him following in his father's way and paving the road for himself to become a true warrior, one that fights for peace. A true warrior is one without enemies because no one deserves to be killed. Also, can I just say, seeing Askeladd go to bat for him like that and allowing him to climb up from his mental hole and giving him the strength to do so really fucked me up? It really felt like being back at the beginning of it all. Ugh, my heart.

In terms of Canute, I can't say I was shocked lolololol. He very much gave me the energy that he killed his brother by the way he was talking about him with the guide saying he "should thank him" who the fuck randomly says that? It was weird. It's just so disappointing to see him become exactly like his father, even though he had two other beautiful and kind paths that he could follow. Instead of using the concept of sharing the love that he learned from the priest for good, he's using it to justify unjust actions. ICK. GROSS. HATE HIM.

You kept saying it's not the same thing about Thorfinn punching the farmhand. And yes, breaking someone's jaw is certainly not as bad as killing the man. But that's not the point. Thorfinn was provoked and let his anger take over. His anger, rage, etc, all stem from the same source, and while the outcome may not have been lethal in this circumstance, it certainly could have turned out otherwise in different scenarios. In addition, what did punching the farmhand actually achieve? Nothing. Einar got a kick out of it, sure, but he doesn't have Thorfinn's history of violence, so his perspective isn't the same, and the impact on his pysche is totally different. But the farmhands were found out by Pater in the end. If Thorfinn and Einar had not engaged in violence, then the farmhands actually would have been punished or fined instead of just having Ketil call things even. In many cases violence, giving in to your anger and rage, even for understandable reasons, is not the best way to engage, and in fact has consequences beyond just the immediate act or circumstance.

Episode 9 of season 2 parallels episode 18 of season 1 where Canute receives his calling in his dream by being visited by Ragnar, Thorfinn was visited by his father figure Thors and Askeladd and received his calling in life. Pacifism is being re-introduced as the main point in this arc where they are living in a world of violence. It was told back in episodes 1 and 2 of season 1 where Thor tried to explain to Thorfinn what a true warrior is. Thors also told Thorfinn when he gave his dagger to him to only use it for self-defense and not for violence which is why Thorfinn was sad when he punched that farmhand. He reverted to choosing the path of violence in the heat of the moment and as we can see violence will never truly settle anything. Canute's downfall as a person will be explained later in the season although not very directly. You need to read between the lines why he became like this.

This right here, is why this anime stands out the most. It talks about the maturing, moving on and finding a purpose in life. Like yes of course besides defending yourself, not everything needs to resort to violence. Which is exactly the message Thors wanted Thorfinn to understand. Now the journey of Thorfinn begins
