ugh the federation is just as disgusting as the republic they so deeply despise. theyre even fucking worse.

Saying the federacy is worse than the Republic is just wrong. The 86 are always given an opportunity to refuse or quit in the federacy. There are assholes at every level, but there are also those who oppose the assholes at each of those levels, not to mention the top (Ernst Zimmerman) is one of those who oppose the assholes. And even for the assholes, the fact that "No one will miss them" is considered a secondary benefit, the primary being that they're simply the most competent for the mission. Also, the federacy will be providing support for them, trying to do everything that they can to keep them alive. The guy who told them "Nobody here wants you to die" was not being a hypocrite, and choosing his words carefully. It was true that nobody there explicitly wanted them to die, like the republic did. The assholes among them just didn't care much if they died. Even after the assholes had logically justified the suicide mission by saying that only they can accomplish it, the ones who oppose them are still able to throw their weight and allow the 86 to refuse the mission. Not to mention, there are federacy members too in their squad who will be accompanying them in said suicide mission. And finally, even the assholes' disdain towards the 86 isn't because of their birth or race, but rather because of their unnerving mannerisms, which is still bad, but not as bad as "Because they don't have silver eyes and hair".

You can skip the "Special Visual Commentary Episode". It's just an older episode where the cast talks about voicing the characters and whatnot. As for Lena, she is a spoiler. What I can say, is what this episode was attempting to imply with the scenes with Lena and Shin and how the other 86 were trying not to bring Lena up around Shin. Shin stated in the episode that he can hear the Legion all the way to the Republic. So he is very aware that the Republic was overrun by Legion and that the last line of the Republic's defense was breached and overrun. He also hears any new voices that get added to the Legion around the recent Republic invasion. I don't believe I need to tell you what all this tells Shin about the fate of the Republic of San Magnolia.

whilst i agree as a whole theyre not as bad, to say theyre massively different is wrong. sure there are multiple amazing people there, but there are also many who are intolerant and do not understand. Sure the kids had a choice to leave the battlefield, but trauma doesn't work this way. When you're so comfortable being on the battlefield, literally and metaphorically, the calm does not feel real. its dissociative. I think the inability to empathize and understand and help or actually be kind during that shows a lack of empathy and humanity. They not be the same type of bad, but theyre bad nonetheless.
