Personally I think Maomao 100% knows who Jinshi is she is just purposely choses to not let herself believe it. 1) She's too smart for that and has already basically put it together twice. but 2) She's smart enough to know that as a commoner knowing the most important secret in the empire would be incredibly dangerous for her

In this case it's more Maomao doesn't want to know who Jinshi is rather than being unable to figure it out. As she says herself, knowing such secrets as commoner would only lead her towards hardship, at least in her eyes. TBF, it does seem like one of those secrets where once you know, there is no going back, you are now on a watchlist, and your life will never be the same going forward.

I love the subtle development of the Emperor. We barely see him, but we get a LOTTA bad vibes from him early on, which makes sense; at that time, the Rear Palace was essentially a prison for Maomao, and the Emperor's portrayal reflected that. He appeared as a brooding, unknowable figure in the background, only occasionally popping in to make vaguely worrying demands. But now that Maomao's come to view the Rear Palace with nostalgia, he appears to her as... kinda just a regular guy. Pleasant, even! Now it IS kinda wild that they left the question of if he was a pedophile up in the air for like 15-ish episodes, like that was kinda the BIGGEST red flag about the guy, but hey at least here they gave a definitive answer finally
