The way i literally thought they were robots and not humans- this is so fucking vile. This makes it next level fucking disgusting and gross. I'm actually mortified that they could think this is ok.

I know you were already spoiled by it from a previous comment but your realisation into finding out they are human was pretty comedic, somewhat even if it was a big shocker. Don’t worry, you’re not the only reactor I’ve seen that didn’t connect the dots at first but that’s the fun part about the anime too, I suppose.

Anju, the girl with the silver hair with the 86 is there because to be a "human", you must have silver hair and silver eyes. Anju's eyes are blue, meaning she is of mixed blood and therefore isn't "human" in the eyes of the Republic of San Magnolia.

Like in "Frieren" many things in this series have German names, mainly the Legion. In this episode the names of some of the Legion units: "Ameise = ant", "Grauwolf = gray wolf", "Löwe = lion" and the little flying jamming units are called "Eintagsfliege = mayfly".

The Republic is not a cult in my opinion, they are just full blown Nazis. The whole "masterrace" thing and every other race is "subhuman" and considering themselves superior to anyone else, its like textbook Nazis.

The Republic also weirdly feels French with their own whole "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" version of their flag, while it is the Empire's Legion / rogue AI that has the WWII-typical German names...which I imagine is there cause it sounds badass to foreign ears, but Eintagsfliege just doesn't have the same ring to it as a native speaker lol

Yeah it draws from a variety of historical atrocities (even beyond WWII). The imo most obvious parallel so far being, that the order to create the 86th district to round up all the non-Albans, mirrors Roosevelt's Order 9066 that authorized the incarceration of Japanese Americans in internment camps
