Taxes (Patreon)
Content
Starting July 1, Patreon will begin charging sales tax (or VAT) on pledges from patrons in certain countries/states. This is a legal obligation due to recent changes in various countries' tax laws. They'll be emailing you detailed info soon, but I thought I should at least go over the basics now, just to give you all a heads-up.
According to Patreon, less than half of US patrons will be charged tax. Outside the US, it varies by country. Patreon claims that the impact will be minimal in most cases, and many patrons won't see any change at all.
Now, my first thought was to just include sales tax in the existing tier prices, so I could take the hit instead of my patrons. However, according to Patreon, that's illegal in the US, as all taxes must be a separate fee added on top of the actual price.
Fortunately, Patreon has added some tools for creators to optimize the way our content is taxed, and I'm doing everything I can to minimize the amount of tax you'll have to pay.
That should cover it for now. Look out for an email from Patreon in the coming weeks describing this in greater detail, and as always, thanks so much for your support!
