Hey guys! Here is the completed video for my metal cover of Pokemon RBY's wild battle theme! I'm so stoked on how this turned out.

Pokemon Gen 1 really set the stage for what Pokemon and it's music would ultimately be. It's battle themes are epic, driving, usually fast tempo, and above all, so unique and rule-breaking.

These qualities of this particular theme drew me to it as a kid and as a metal arranger made me want to dive into this theme so dang hard!

The original theme utilizes multiple layers to give this chaotic sense and that provided a few challenges for me as I definitely needed to include that to make the song feel like the original, but I also wanted to let my guitars sound huge and get the parts across so in certain areas, I exercised a bit of restraint. Mainly on the rhythm guitars where I elected to actually play some more straight forward chuggy C riffs during the main melodies to give the lead guitars room to do their insane Pokeshreds. I'm so happy with how this turned out and I think it's exactly what the arrangement needed. But then during the pre-chorus I let the rhythm guitars get a bit more insane haha.

Something I really wanted to do as well was add a FAT breakdown into the arrangement as I felt like the original theme was quite a short loop and I could get away with adding a bit of flair in there as long as I don't hurt the vibe of the song. I think it works perfectly as it gives a break from the insanity and lets you bang your head for a little bit. I was arranging this on stream and I had the impulsive idea to throw the main Pokemon melody motif on top of the breakdown as well which turned out so awesome I think!

Let's dive right into battle! I had an awesome break doing some traveling but now it's time to let the video game metal flow once more. We're going all the way back to generation 1 Pokemon with the iconic wild Pokemon battle theme. This theme hits the nostalgia so hard for me personally experiencing that first moment of battle against that level 3 Pidgey. I instantly knew at this point that Pokemon and it's music was the absolute business. This theme alongside the trainer theme solidified how insane Pokemon music as a whole would be all the way up to present day Pokemon ost's. The signature insane chromatic melodies and driving rhythm makes these themes some of my favorite vgm of all time. And the driving rhythm in particular makes them perfect for some crushing metal arrangements! I wanted to strike a balance with this metal arrangement, making it as chaotic and hectic as the original but also trying to almost simplify certain elements of it to allow the guitars to be extra crushing. It can sometime become overwhelming to go too overboard with the rhythm guitars and they lose their impact. I feel like I struck a balance here where everything is super epic and chaotic but it feels nice and crushing. I also wanted to develop the theme a bit more so I introduced an original riff in the form of a breakdown just to add some zazz to the theme! The original piece is a very short loop so this made it feel to me like a fully fleshed out metal arrangement now!
