Oil Blaze: How PTA Created the Intense Fire Sequence for There Will Be Blood

I love how crazy and intense that scene is. It’s pretty much the centerpiece of the movie, so how did Paul Thomas Anderson do it? Well, that’s exactly what we are going to talk about in this episode of Making Film... Great new video Tyler. Since you talk about the scene where HW gets blown off the roof, you might find this interesting: I was at this masterclass with editor Dylan Tichenor last year, and he talked extensively about this film. There was something about that scene: PTA didn’t get all the shots he wanted (or at least that Tichenor thought were necessary), and they had no chance of reshooting it. According to Tichenor, the scene (HW getting blown off the roof) just didn’t really work. So he messed around with that sequence for a long time, and found his way out by cutting several takes and bit-and-pieces together in a very quick pace, while also using a bit of digital zoom — you can tell especially when HW falls on the floor, we jumpcut to a slightly closer cropping of the same shot. It works like a charm I think, but it was apparently really an issue for some time. Another interesting thing he said was: they had to reshoot the scene where Daniel doesn’t let Eli bless the well. The scene didn’t work at first apparently, because Eli was further back in the crowd and he and Daniel didn’t make eye contact - this muddled the meaning of the scene. They then re-shot the entire scene, just to have the two of them looking at each other.

Fascinating! I just looked at the shot again and there is totally a digital zoom! Thanks for the info! I love how PTA will reshoot a scene if it doesn't feel right in the edit. I believe he also reshot the scene of Dirk and Jack meeting in the Hot Traxx kitchen because of the edit.

Yeah that's right! And I'm sure it happens all the time, but we barely hear about it apart from these occasional instances. Would love it if some of that footage would surface someday.
