Hello Patrons, and big welcome to all the new patrons who've signed up over the last couple of weeks.

A quick update from me: I'm working on the next Napoleonic Wars video, which covers the events of 1807 and focuses on the Battle of Friedland. As you can see from the screenshot, pre-unification Germany continues to be a major headache! And Napoleon was constantly redrawing its borders, which doesn't help. But the video is now nearly finished, and will be released first as a Patron exclusive next week.

I then plan to start work on the next Napoleonic Wars video - Peninsular War Part 1 - then put the series on hold briefly, in order to produce the winner of the Patron popular vote. If you can remember back that far, the winner was Mike's suggestion for a history of the Republic of Venice, which should make a great video.

For Patrons old and new, remember that I run a permanent AMA (ask-me-anything) policy, so please feel free to post questions about history, the videos, the channel, etc, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks for your ongoing support. Now must get back to the borders of the Kingdom of Westphalia..

How much creative freedom do you take with the layouts of towns and borders, or do you have sources?

EpicHistoryTV

Hey Marco. Absolutely, everything is sourced. However the reliability of the source can vary - for European borders, there are a number of contemporary and modern maps that can be compared. Osprey books have plenty of good maps for the military campaigns and battles. Wikipedia can provide some good maps, either from books or created by contributors, who list their own sources. I would say the only creative freedom is in things like giving rivers an extra little curve or wiggle, so they look like rivers, when I can't be exactly sure of the curves. And sometimes I'll simplify a border if it helps to make the map look more attractive, or to make it easier to understand.

Speaking of German Unification, that would make a really nice series. Most people just think "Holy Not Roman Empire"->"Bismark single handedly creating a German Empire with the force of his Pickelhaube"

It's a good idea. The map work is a bit daunting but the history is fascinating and relevant.
