I am a bit late with my comment, but if you are interrested, the scene where Gideon was petting a small version of himself could be a reference to Austin Powers. This movie is the only one I know where the villian has a little version of himself walking around. This Austin Powers vilian was actually a parody of the James Bond vilian Ernst Stavro Blofield (head of the SPECTRE organization). Which was the original villian in the James Bond movies since 1961 with the bold head, big scar in his face and had a few famous scenes where he was petting his white cat, while sitting in his big chair. This could be a parody of a parody or a reference to both.
