I'm very late to the party here, but if you don't know about it you should read up on the Tuskeegee experiments. The government gave a bunch of black people syphillis just to see what would happen. During this time, the cure was discovered, but they did not administer the cure to the black folks. That's the historical context for Isaiah Bradley's character. His character's story echos real historical events.
