Regarding the dead on the crash site, I believe their skin might have have turned yellow as they were intoxicated by the atmosphere of Kenari. I think most of the population died out during the so-called mining incident leaving the children behind and it's possible that the Kenarians that we see have somehow become immune to the toxicity of their environment allowing them to breath normally the air that would be otherwise deadly to outworlders.
