This two-parter has some of my favorite quotes, such as "that's why I keep traveling: to be proved wrong." That's a philosophy I share. Exploration and experience is about letting the world contradict you and then deciding which of your prior beliefs or habits to let stand and which to let crumble. I also love the stuff about the irresistible habit of humans to go into danger out of the sake of curiosity. That's what sends us to the bottom of the ocean or the coldest reach of the arctic and even space itself. There are not many things that can overwrite the human survival instinct, but somehow "because it's never been done before" is one of them. The ideas in this story are so compelling to me. This show likes to explore the adage that magic is just unexplained science. Occasionally, the doctor and/or companion don't manage to find the science and we in the audience are left in the realms of myth and magic. The concept of an evil beast at the center of the universe sending out waves of dark psychic energy, mild enough to go unnoticed but strong enough to seep into the psyche of any higher life form, is excellent horror. This episode still gives me the shivers and I think part of the longevity is that the philosophical ideas they wrestle with are strong and evergreen. I'm so curious about how you're going to feel about the next one. It's pretty polarizing in the fan community but don't let anyone sway your opinion either way ahead of time.
