Russel T. Davies (show runner) has said that Adam was meant to be a “failed companion.” Just because someone ends up in the Tardis, doesn’t mean they’re fit to be there. Things can go terribly awry with time travel and the wrong person might be too cruel or cowardly or selfish and cause disaster. It’s also a way of distinguishing Rose. Maybe inviting her was sudden but the Doctor saw something in Rose and she has proven that she belongs in the universe of spectacular. Simon Pegg, who played the main bad guy, is a brilliant comedic actor and I personally think he would have made a great doctor. He did a good job but feels wasted in this role. I suppose it’s never too late… Also, yea, Doctor Who is very true to episodic sci-fi form. Each episode (or two-parter) has something to chew on. That’s the beauty of sci-fi: it’s like a sandbox to play with moral questions and social problems. Talking about real world issues can be emotionally exhausting and scary and intimidating. But through science fiction, we get the mental protection of the “make believe” while having a very real interaction with heavy topics.
