This is my favorite Flannagan show, but because I enjoy this story, but I definitely would recommend hill house as well. So to answer the marriage question - the show takes place in 1987 before the time skips start. The first legal same sex marriage in the US was in 2004, and it wasn't federally recognized until 2015. However, before same sex marriage was legalized, in 2000 Vermont allowed Civil Unions, their attempt at creating a system that allowed same sex couples to attain some legal rights but not the same as marriage. So when Jamie says "our union is officially Civil", we know it's the year 2000. So we know that they were together for 13 years at least, which as narrator Jamie said, it was more than most get. That makes me feel slightly better that one died.
