Personally Im a bit tired of empathetic villains so there's comfort in a story with clear good and evil, BUT I do wonder if Sauron is kind of telling the truth. He tried to leave it all and she dragged him back in. With Morgoth dead he saw his first opportunity to be something different and tried it.

Maybe the stranger is Gandalf, that's why he's so fond of hobbits. Maybe his Journey with Nori allowed him to see the courage of Hobbits.
