“Why did they make Abed the asshole? [Well] He’s an asshole too.” Like I’m sure most fans of this show, Abed is far and away my favorite character. I love Abed and I relate to him, his love of Tv/film and his social awkwardness so much. I also think it’s so beautiful that Imon discovered herself and her diagnosis in part through Abed and this show, and that has made me love and appreciate Abed and this show so much more. That said, I worry a little that Imon’s appreciation of Abed is causing her to view his character slightly through rose colored glasses. Her reactions to the Abed storylines in several episodes this season, such as 2x10 and 2x15, give me the impression that she may be missing some of the nuance of his character. Part of what I love about this show and its characters is that each member of the study group is complex and well developed. I can’t stand Pierce, but even he has many moments of wisdom, compassion, and altruism. Likewise, since season one Abed has shown he can very often be selfish and insensitive, and those are major, recurring aspects of his character. I feel like Season 3 addresses and develops these very flaws and aspects of Abed’s character even more so than prior seasons and I hope that brilliance isn’t lost on Imon. Of course, that is only my personal opinion and subjective interpretation of the show and Abed, and Imon is certainly entitled to have her own regardless of what I or any commenters say. I am so happy that she has continued to react to this amazing show and I will gladly continue to watch and support her moving forward whether her thoughts align with mine or not. Looking forward to Season 3!
