This is a rough episode for Uhtred, spending a year in slavery, chained to a slave ship. The escape attempt in Iceland was admirable but unfortunately failed. The pain and guilt Uhtred felt must be immense as he promised Halig that he would free them and he's only there because he was loyal to Uhtred. Only to have that slaver scum Sverri force Uhtred to drown poor Halig knowing there's nothing he could do about it.

Uhtred is pretty broken by the time he is about to be killed by Sven. Luckily Ragnar, Brida & Hild come to save the day. Sverri gets what he deserves when he is killed by Finan, very satisfying. The introduction of our boy from Ireland Finan is great, Mark Rowley does a great performance. Uhtred also rescues Gisela from Abbot Eadred's clutches and kills that miserable old bastard.

However no good deed goes unpunished as despite how awful Eadred was, he was a Abbot of the church and that crime can't go unanswered. Alfred needs Uhtred to help with his plans to expand into Mercia so he forces him back into his service by saying either you come back to me or Ragnar will be held responsible for Eadred's death.

Alfred is a smooth operator, he is a clever man who knows that working with both the Saxons & Danes is key to bringing about the dream of England. However he's not above using coercion, blackmail and threats to get others to bend to his will. Uhtred & Alfred respect one another, but don't trust each other.

When it comes to husbands in those times remember, covers and books ladies...books and covers. Love the reaction. I knew this episode would be intense for you both. Hilde's reaction to the Abbot's death was because she knew it would have consequences that wouldn't be desired. Sometimes justice goes against the law of the land, which brings with it harsh consequences. Also I think at this time Uhtred is meant to be in his early twenties and is dealing not only with culture shock but also with the tendency to rash actions that come with youth. There were laws that the church had in place but most of them did not favor women. Couple that with the reverence for men of the church during that period and you're basically allowed to do/say whatever you want if there isn't royalty around. Thanks for a great reaction. The two of you never disappoint!
