The switch in the final scene bookends the story with the flash-future when Gene hesitates and ultimately doesn't open the emergency exit. Quite a road that led him from ignoring a warning on a switch to choosing to wait for 3 hours in a smelly trash disposal area rather than risk his identity.

I love the final scene, Jimmy is still tempted to break the rules no matter if he gets the "dream job" with the "company car" and his "cocobolo desk", or not. It's who he is... remind you of something a certain someone said?
