Champion Bescos

Loving these reactions. Glad the two of you are so into the show. I always notice that different reactors value Gon's actions in this fight in various ways. Many find it heroic, his stubbornness and inability to give in being classic tropes of a hero. Others like myself find it rather selfish and small minded of our protagonist (in this particular fight, where he would have other chances if he just gave up). There are moments in life where sheer pride won't get you through, after all, and Gon's youth - his naivety - plays a big part in how he's unable to grasp that fundamental concept. He's the classic shounen protagonist at this stage, except HxH is anything but a standard shounen. It's a deconstruction of the genre. I think the writer of the series is a slow-burn genius and moments like this, upon revisiting, really show how deep he takes the characters without you initially catching it. Take Hanzo for example. Abi seemed to find his commentary braggadocios and his actions cruel (most of us do on our first watch!), and even Gon made light of his backstory, but what Hanzo was trying to do was reason with Gon; explain to him the gap in not just their skills, but in their spectrum of capabilities. He's a killer, and a talented one at that, while Gon is just a strong but ultimately innocent kid. He wanted Gon to grasp that reality and consciously choose to forfeit instead of continue to suffer. It was a kindness that Gon blew off with his classic hero "can-do attitude". Hanzo deserved the win, but couldn't accept it without crossing a harsh moral line or risking his position. In a way, you feel bad for the ninja, because we can all relate to not being able to get through to an idealistic child... Awesome episode, awesome development, awesome show, and I can't wait for the next reaction.

It pains me to hear y'all talk about the brackets lol. They explained how it works and y'all still talk like the winner advances. But I guess it's okay to be confused with this isn't a normal bracket anyways. Still love the reactions.

I'm underselling this statement, but, excellent comment :)
