1) He’s the lead scientist. He’s formed a working relationship with his arctic fox scientist counterpart. 

2) He’s a gifted junior scientist with a fresh PhD. He’s formed a romantic long-distance relationship with his female arctic fox junior scientist counterpart. 

3) He’s an industrial spy sent to steal the tech. But, the portal was left open and he sees an arctic fox scientist is watching through the portal
