Speaking from experience for sure. Maybe someone expected 'something' back for protecting him at military school? And that pattern tends to repeat. What did Jared do once he left school? What has happened?

I'm not gonna write him off so quickly. He has his reasons for being defensive and protective of Riley. Reasons we don't know or understand yet. Remember he has baggage Riley doesn't know about yet. You can't fault him for being a big brother in his own way.
