Also, related note, captions for the flashcube video are about 2/3 complete. I'll finish them up tonight and release the video tomorrow.

The office has an economizer!

Just a quick little update for ya

I have an older house in Minnesota with no ducted AC. I use one of the "U-shaped" 2-phase inverter window units and it's great. For days where it's nice out but still, I have 2 vornado transom low profile window fans I run instead. Like a manual economizer!

You're pretty much spot on with the theory of operation. There's most likely an economizer controller that interfaces with the compressor(s). The econ controller looks at outside air temperature (or outside air enthalpy, if it's really fancy) and will use OA if it's favorable for cooling. Depending on how it's set up, you may see economizing and mechanical cooling at the same time if it has the ability to compare outside to return air. From what I've seen in my admittedly small amount of research, in residential applications it's more common to see ERUs/ERVs than traditional economizer systems. PS. I work directly with commercial environmental controls and building automation/integration, so if you ever have any questions feel free to send me a PM.

So.. I was listening to reviewbrahs broadcast on my old sears/Silvertone and he gave a S/O to Alec in Wisconsin. Coincidence?

I'm working on a passive solar home so I might try to do something like this.
