Well now, here it is!  Thanks for your patience, everyone.  I was a little worried this would hit the copyright monsters due to some longer clips, but we seem to be in the clear.

This ended up being 26 minutes long!  Eek!  So, I hope you're comfortable.  I was maybe going to split this, but I actually already did.  I was intending to put MUSE and Squeeze LD in this video, but ran out of time.  So, there will be one more video on LD, plus the CLD-M301 I talked about earlier.

DVD: The Doom of Laserdisc

You can support this channel on Patreon! Link below Well, it had a good run. Although Laserdisc could never really get off the ground, it had a reasonable showing in the high end video market. Intended as a mass market product, Laserdisc would never get there. But DVD... well that's a whole other story. In 7 or 8 years, DVD went from being introduced to being everywhere, and it is still selling pretty well in the face of streaming services such as Netflix. Just how long DVD can cling to life remains to be seen, but you can still stroll on into any big box store and pick up a DVD player and some movies to go with it. This video tells how DVD got started, and why it was able to succeed where Laserdisc failed. The clips used in this video are the property of their respective owners. Are those Back to the Future VCDs from a PAL country? They might have just been sped up to 25 fps instead of using telecine like for 29.97 fps in NTSC-land.

Superb video, described both the technical and consumer/economic factors behind the rise of DVD. Thanks!

Taylor Cuzela

Great video as always. 😊 Thanks for taking the time and really digging into LD. I was around it via family growing up but nothing like VHS. Cute haircut btw.

That could be! Malaysia is on a 50 hz power grid, so perhaps these are running at 25 FPS. I'm a little surprised my Panasonic DMR-ES40V could play them OK. I went through the footage frame by frame in Premiere and it appears every 5th frame repeats, which would suggest the player is doing its own conversion up to 30 FPS.

I had that exact Sony TV you played the PS2 on and it brought me right back to 2002. Another great video, as always! :)
