I actually thought this was, in a funny kinda way, a good start to this season, and I’ll tell ya why!:’) I wanna say too, yours and some of the other dweebs criticisms were spot on about this episode, the voices were a total afterthought for me almost immediately too! I especially agree that the usual witty, refined comedy we’ve come to expect from this show was almost non existent here. Your comment about Rick, “we didn’t get that same sharpness from him” perfectly encapsulates what’s wrong with the episode fundamentally! Rick’s a huge part of the show and has such a pivotal role in almost every episode! So to see him completely sideline here and not make any effort to change this terrible situation that he absolutely created, by once again being a shitty person, really sucked. No one wants an intervention from Rick, granted, but I was dying to see him actually go out of his way here to do the right thing for Mr PoopyButthole! Those rare moments when he proves us all wrong and does something genuinely selfless are like gold dust to me, and I think an ending like that would’ve fit much better in this season opener! Rather than the climax to this episode that we got, which was just “bleh” for me😂 That’s why the Tony toilet episode from S4 is one of my all time favourites, it showed a side to Rick I don’t think we’d ever seen before to that extent, and it’s so lovely! It doesn’t change those fundamental parts of his character, just adds a little layer to him, there is a human being in there deep down after all. I sob every time I watch the ending to that episode because it showed that Rick actually cared about Tony. Him choosing to do something completely selfless by giving him the toilet, but more than that, something kind! It was just too late for Tony to see🥲 literally here crying again writing this🤣😭 I think the weird tone this episode had wasn’t helped by the subject matter being explored, which maybe could lend to someee of the more lowdown/distasteful jokes…? Idk it was kinda rough at some points for sure!😅 These guys are, for the most part, some pretty terrible people, doing really hard drugs and ignoring all their problems. Then there’s Gene of course….🤣 I’m not really expecting the funniest or most creative episode of the show from a plot like this one. It was realistic I guess, in the sense that most of the humour was matching the characters level of degeneracy lolll😭 The reason why I say it was a good way to start this season is we needed easing back into the show, more than any other season for obvious reasons. I think bringing together almost every character that Justin voiced was absolutely intentional and a pretty genius way of doing that! Getting a feel for all the new voices at the same time made the change feel so much smaller and like I said before, an afterthought before too long! A more relaxed paced episode as you put it, which is definitely strange for a season opener I agree, just sort of worked for me in that sense! I feel good about the rest of the season honestly and I reaaally didn’t think I would! Okay, you have mowed yourself into a corner just like that poor sheriff at the end because I HAVE TO HEAR THIS MR MEESEEKS IMPRESSION NOW OMG!!!🤣🤣✨✨ It’s on the bucket list now for sure LOL! Also you did NOT with that Justin Roiland joke I was like “ALYCIA😂😂” thank you for filling the void of wittiness this episode left, funniest part of the whole reaction, literally!!🤣 The Lawnmower bits were the highlight of this episode for sure! You made that first part so freaking funny with your “ooh…. watch out for the- Ah…. “ as it slowly moved towards the car🤣🤣 The after credits scene was so perfect too because I’d completely forgotten about the lawnmower at that point!!😂😭 Being left to ponder how much trouble that lawnmower actually caused on its adventure is way funnier than if they kept cutting back to it throughout the episode! The sheriff pulling out all those necklaces individually to kiss them had my dyinggg!!🤣 LOVE Hugh Jackman, especially in the movie Prisoners, and he seems like a pretty stand up guy too from what I’ve seen. So seeing him be the absolute worst type of person here was so funny to me! THAT PICTURE he had hung in his house, biggest one on the entire wall, him naked with the wolverine claws cracked me up so good!!😂 I would LOVE to see an episode where Rick and Bird Daughter had to team up, maybe to save Bird person? I think their dynamic could be really funny for a one off situation, and teach Rick a lot about himself! You got any predictions or hopes for this season, lemme know, it’s always awesome to talk to you! I hope the next episode is way better for you too homie!✨

I'm so glad that the voices didn't detract from the show. I have a feeling they wanted to start off with an episode featuring all of Rick's core friends and family, so that we got a taste of all of the main voices interacting. Since most of Justin's ancillary characters are just variations of the Mr. Poopybutthole voice, that's pretty much out of the way, too. This was probably a random episode in the season and they shuffled it to number one specifically as a buffer. It definitely wasn't the best, but it was far from the worst. Overall, I'm not disappointed with the potential of a Roiland-less R&M after seeing this. Curious if we'll ever get another improv-heavy Inter-Dimensional Cable episode. That will be the REAL test. Let's hope this season at least ends with a banger.

A lot of people have been chiming in that we needed this episode as a buffer so I think you're spot on! As Tim said in a comment above this, it was a damned if they do, damned if they don't situation so might as well get the recast drama out of the way first. I'm still cautiously optimistic for what the rest of this season has in store so fingers crossed!

I would have LOVED to see a Tony- like arc play out in this episode as well. When Rick told PB “Because you’re my friend” at Hugh’s house, the sentiment fell flat for me and I think the writers missed an opportunity to make this episode more touching and meaningful. However, like you mentioned (and several others have as well!), I do believe this was an intentional buffer episode. I didn’t see that on first watch, but I think you’re absolutely right that we needed this slow start to ease into a season of unknowns. Get used to the voices. Move on from the drama. Hopefully episode 2 will bring back more of the typical Rick & Morty energy we’ve come to know and love. LOL! Oh nooo I HAVE mowed myself into a corner just like the sheriff, haven’t I? 🤣 Damn, okay, I’ll offer up my best attempt at some point this season 🤣 I really hope we get to see more of Bird Daughter too! I think another disappointment I felt in this episode, that processed more later, is that we didn’t see BD’s escape from prison. I felt like we earned that as an audience and seeing her home safe and sound with her Dad AFTER all the action went down was a little underwhelming. But if they bring her back into play as a recurring character this season, I’d love that!
