The text I sent to my sister this morning about Adult Swim cutting ties with Justin Roiland. I would love to know your thoughts about the future of Rick and Morty as a show!?! Do you think they’ll be able to find someone to fill Justin’s shoes as a voice actor? Will interdimensional cable ever return?! I’m also so curious about the implications this could have on Solar Opposites as well?

I respectfully ask that any conversation about whether Justin is innocent or guilty stay out of this thread. As someone who has not been believed in a similar situation before, this is a topic that is extremely triggering for me. On the flip side, I also recognize that none of us were there, so at the end of the day we just don’t know. Please feel free to discuss this particular facet of the news anywhere else, just please not here. I thank you all in advance for your sensitivity ❤️

Ahhh that's tough.... I can't say that his voice is irreplaceable, but at the same time, I just don't see the show going any further than a season at the most without him, as the stench of this scandal would ruin the experience. Just a very tough spot to be in. I hope Solar Opposites doesn't hold the same fate but I doubt it sadly...

Haven’t been on the discord haven’t ya? Lol

Honestly, I feel the show hinges on Justin and the many voices he performs for the show, much like Robin Williams and The Genie, it really can’t be replaced. I guess the energy of Rick me Morty along with Solar Opposites might not be as good without him. Not to say I want his charges to be dropped and get back to these shows, he really should be legally punished for the shot he did and have him learn there are consequences to his actions. The quality will drop with him gone is what I’m trying to ramble out.

I don't think replacing the voices will be that difficult. There are some really talented voice actors out there who have an incredibly wide range (and there's also a ton that can now be done in post). But, as you noted, the biggest loss might be in Roiland's input in writing and his improvisation. I just feel like it won't ever be quite the same. Same with Solar Opposites. Even if it's close, there's just part of you that will KNOW that it's not the same, even if it seems to be on the surface. I'll still watch obviously, and hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm not overly optimistic. But at the moment, as long as absolutely nothing happens to the cast, writers, animators, and producers of Arcane, I can stay happy. I MEAN IT, DAMMIT! Hands off of Arcane, you stupid TV show ruining gremlins! 🤣

That was sort of my initial reaction as well. Season 7 will air and if it’s not one HECK of a season, I could see it ending. But who knows. And a few other patrons commented above this that Solar Opposites is the same 😭

Something very similar happened with Ren and Stimpy early in its second season, when John K, the creator, writer, and voice of Ren (as well as many other characters) was released from the show by Viacom. The show still lasted another three seasons and most people never even noticed. And, at the time, it was the number one cable show in the country. Of course, now we have the internet and everyone knows everything that happens immediately. I think the show still has a chance to make it if everyone else is still comfortable going on. Voices can be replaced and even explained in the writing. The thing the show may suffer from is the lack of Roiland's improvising and the fact that so many people feel he is synonymous with the characters of Rick and Morty (and Korvo). The audience may not be comfortable with anyone else, no matter how well they do. That would definitely be the nail in the coffin. On the other hand, necessity IS the mother of invention and maybe a large shake-up may revitalize the show in a way that is unexpected. It was starting to feel like Rick was getting more resentful and aggressive toward the audience and maybe that was Roiland being sick of the same comments and questions over and again. At least the show left off at a good place to come in fresh. In fact, there were times last season where I wondered if they had painted themselves into a corner, story-wise, and weren't sure where to go from here. Either way, I'll still give the next season a shot. But no matter how well it's executed people will be watching it distracted by the fact that a change has occurred and ruminating on every little detail. My honest opinion is that this is probably the beginning of the end, but I will remain hopeful nonetheless.

Ah bummer! I really wanted to see Rick find the version of himself that murdered his family..... It won't be as fulfilling if somebody or a group of people voiced his characters during that arc of the series. Well at least Solar Opposites wont be as affected by his absence since he doesn't voice that many characters in the show. Still won't be the same though, at least not to me. But hey, they might pull off a Wakanda Forever and make it work.

This is sad...I'm sad now...I feel like that magician guy from Star vs. sucked all of my joy into his hat. No way Rick & Morty is going to be comparable with anyone else. Justins style and way of speaking are so interwoven into the fabric of the show. But then again I'm still sad that they replaced Dumbledore from the third movie onward because Richard Harris the actor died and I still call the new actor "The fake Dumbledore" it's only been like 20 years so I tend to hold onto things 😄 Then again Richard Harris was 700x better as Dumbledore because he embodied that mischievous laid back projection of assured power the way he's supposed to be in the books, uhm but I digress lol. So anyways fuck this day I'm getting a drink 😒

I’m 100% with you. Yeah I think even if they can find voice actors to replace him, there’s no doubt that he brought some zany, wacky energy to the shows he was in that will be difficult to replicate.

alyciadweeb

I agree with absolutely everything you said in this!!! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts

alyciadweeb

I think you hit the nail on the head. Even if someone is a perfect Rick or Morty voice, it feels like there will be an intrinsic pushback from the audience because Justin himself was so interwoven with the entire process. But you’re also not the first person to say this may be the shake-up the show needs and who knows, it could end up blowing us all away. I’m not optimistic but am always down to be pleasantly surprised 😆

alyciadweeb

I know I felt super gutted over the news too. That show has been such a huge part of my life, especially since starting the channel! I will keep my fingers crossed that by some grace of glob the 7th season blows us all away and it can at least gain enough support to finish out the story arcs it was building. I’m glad we at least got an evil- Morty close in season 5 that felt fulfilling. But I get it…. I’m sad too 😔

Justin's name will still appear as a co-creator & writer so he does get a share of residuals. However he will no longer receive acting credit or residuals for voice work. With this and the lack of acting reimbursement, I hope he saved his money because any hope of new work coming is doubtful for the foreseeable future.

I'm hoping he's innocent but as a realist he might be guilty, I say let him have his day in court. But Adult Swim and the like made the wise choice. If he's found not guilty, then welcome him back.

I think it's reasonable to assume they'll find acceptable voice replacements. As far as everything else he brought to the show it's hard to say how it will all compare. That being said I think they made the right choice considering the charges. It just wouldn't be good for the show or the business to have done nothing.

alyciadweeb

Aside from how much I love the show and how devastated I’ll be if it goes in the toilet, it will be suuuper interesting just to see what they come up with!
