So my gripes with the finale are as follows: First, Mina shouldn't have survived. It seemed dumb to have her survive just for one last little speech which was pretty lackluster, and if they were trying to teach the viewer a lesson about evil people never truly disappear or whatever, then mission not accomplished, because everyone was truly tired of her at this point. Second, I completely agree with you with the Moon and Star makeup, and that Moon shouldn't have become a villain just to switch back, it wasn't true to her form or character. Third, the Mewni/Earth merge was kind of a last minute thing and it is kind of weird. I feel like if Star and Marco just didn't get to see each other again it would be more emotionally powerful, but at the same time, I feel like no one would be satisfied with that ending, and this was the only way to bring them back together. They also should have kissed again upon reuniting. Fourth and finally, this is a little more obscure but something that really bothered me that it never got resolved. Eclipsa never got to defend herself. Every time they talked about her way of ruling, it was criticism, and I really wanted a scene where she stood up to Moon and the High Commission talking about how her estranged relationship with Solaria made her a Queen that protects monsters and how she was sick of them picking her every action apart because it wasn't the norm for them. It actually got to me enough that I wrote and published my own fanfiction about it where she just explains to everyone post finale why she is the way she is. Here's the link if you're interested: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13294786/1/Renegade-or-Redeemer Overall, Star was a great series, but I think they should have thought about some of the decisions in Season 4 a little more since they either didn't make sense or just didn't work out. The biggest takeaway from the series is that Eclipsa is best girl XD

I almost forgot ... Eclipsa, Queen of Starco Shipping.

I kept hearing things like, "What went wrong with Star and Marco?" so I thought they would be separated in the end. I guess it's good that they weren't. The show alluded to citizens of Mewni possibly being from Earth originally. Maybe the two worlds were together before and it was the magic keeping them apart and that's why the nexus seemed to be in the Realm of Magic. When the magic ended the two worlds realigned. You are right about the amount of unresolved questions. Perhaps one feature length film could wrap everything up nicely. Overall, I'm still happy with the series and, although it wasn't perfect, I still enjoyed the finale.

Although...if all of the magic is gone how is Pony Head still floating without any physical assistance?

Jordan

HOLY MOLY I have sooo many mixed feelings about thissss! I really thought we were gonna get more answers than that by the end but I have so many more questions now ahhh!!🤣 like you said if they didn’t originally plan to end the show here I can see why they chose that ending but if not I just wonder... why?😂 I mean I’m glad Star and Marco aren’t separated forever but what is this new world half earth half mewni?? I just thought that was such a crazy thing to do before ending a show! I still really enjoyed it a lot and though it had some beautiful moments, I just wish we could’ve got a few more answers or a little plot twist or something that made this a more memorable finale. Despite my complaints this show was really great and had so many amazing episodes that will stick with me forever so the good outweighs the bad I think for me! For my last question on Star reactions I wanted it to be a really important one so here goes... Favourite pizza topping? I’m a pepperoni guy myself but I equally love margherita so either of those very boring options for me😂 Thank you so much for your videos you’re the best and I can’t wait to start infinity train soon!✨

Thanks for getting me into this series Alycia! It’s been a lot of fun experiencing it for the first time with you! 😊 As for the finale… I’m gonna need some time to gather my thoughts. My thoughts as of right now though… As far as episodes go, I enjoyed it. It had a lot of really fun moments, and funny lines (like Ponyhead cheering Star up with the stories of her friends (and the High Commission) (thank god, her last appearance was actually funny, and not annoying), and Marco’s final interaction with Janna (of course, she knows how to stop her heart, lol)). I also really like the whole concept of Star having to destroy magic to end things (RIP, Glossaryk), and seeing Meteora “diiiiiiip dooooown” was adorable. Also, Earth and Mewni merging into one at the end was a really cool idea (one last gift from Glossaryk, I’m guessing). That said, as far as FINALES go… I feel kind of underwhelmed. To me, this seemed more like a season finale than a series finale. Even though the magic was destroyed, it doesn’t really feel like the story’s quite over (at least, to me). It seems clear to me that they thought they would have more seasons to wrap the show up, and had to seriously rush some things. I feel like they could have done a lot more with Star and Marco’s relationship in this episode, or… you know… throughout the season. To me, this solidifies the opinion that they should have gotten together at the end of season 3, and then develop that relationship further throughout season 4, rather than play “will they, won’t they” throughout the season, when we all know they will. That probably would have made this work a bit better for me. I also wasn’t a fan of the way things wrapped up with Mina (though it WAS satisfying when she saw Solaria helping the “monster smoochers”, lol). On top of her defeat feeling really anticlimactic, I don’t like that she didn’t really get her comeuppance. I mean, really…? After all she did, they’re just going to let her go…? I agree with you about Star & Moon’s make-up. It definitely felt forced. Initially, I really liked the twist that Mina was working for Moon, but… they didn’t really do anything with that, so… I don’t really see the point. It would have been better if they just hadn’t done that twist at all. Also, yeah, as you said, they never really explained why Marco had the cheek-marks and could do magic. And… they really just killed off the High Commission like that…? As a side-note…? Then there’s the whole Mewni-Earth thing (Mewnearth?) As I said, I think that’s actually a really cool idea, but… to only show us that in the finale? When we know there will be no more episodes? I really want to see more of that, and how the two worlds coexist together. I don’t want to give the wrong impression – I DID enjoy the episode. It’s just that I was hoping the finale would leave me with a feeling of completion, and not… well, wanting more. I generally don’t like comparing shows, and I’m not going to compare them as a whole, but as far as finales go, Gravity Falls, IMO, did a much better job of wrapping up its story. That said, despite some disappointments with the finale, this was still a great series, that I really enjoyed! Thanks again, Alycia, for getting me into it! Favourite Quotes: “Hey, uh, I don’t have a weapon, and that place is really dangerous!” – Marco “Why don’t you use that big mole of yours?” – Hekapoo “Are they-??” – Moon “Aaaaawww.” – Eclipsa “Ohohoho, you don’t have any skin.” – Star “Actually, we came here to heal her in the Magic Sanctuary… which I probably shouldn’t have just told you about.” – Eddie “SHH! EDDIE! You know that’s where Moon goes to hide in times of danger! She could be in there right now! …And I should stop talking!” – River “Pudding??” – Moon “Yeah, magic’s weird. Wanna blow it up?” – Star “Tom! You’re all right! And Marco! You just flipped a horse!” – Star “Yeah, dude, you just flipped a horse!” – Tom “I JUST FLIPPED A HORSE!!” – Marco “Yes! Wah! Wahwah!” – Moon “Mommy? Are we on alligators?” – Star “Yes.” – Moon “Weird.” – Star “So, I looked at the Queen, and I says, “Talon don’t ride for no kingdom! Talon rides for Talon!” And then I saved the kingdom, and we totally kissed!” – Talon

Malcolm Ferguson

That's a really good point about Eclipsa. I didn't think of that, but I totally agree. She never did get a chance to defend her actions, or prove herself as a Queen. Hell, even if she tried to prove herself, and failed, I think it would have been better than her never getting the chance.

Malcolm Ferguson

I kind of a minimalist when it comes to pizza. I just like cheese, lol. Unless it's from Pizza Delight, in which case, I will get pepperoni as well.

Anonymous

From one pizza joint, pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage (not your normal pizza sausage, some sort of special italian sausage, comes in a roll like salami), extra cheese. From another, double old world pepperoni, double extra cheese, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms.

Your thoughts on the finale reflect my own. It wasn't a finale I wanted to see, full of many issues that just make it subpar imo. The show overall was still pretty enjoyable as a whole though, because before the tail end of Season 4, it was really high quality in terms of writing. Regarding Marco's wand usage: It was never officially confirmed as far as I know, but one of the previous episodes implies that the first Mewmans came from Earth (whom we see in Meteora's Leasson arrive all disoriented and confused, having traveled through the magic dimension to get to Mewni). Ergo, humans are capable of doing magic if they have the wand, which explains why Marco can use it too. Doesn't explain Marco's cheekmarks directly, but Star's disappeared after the magic got destroyed so it's probably related to that in some way. That too was also never officially confirmed either. Something else they glossed over: destroying the magic destroyed beings made of magic, implied by the deaths of the Magic High Commission. That means all those lovable spells in the wand are all dead now, as well as who knows how many countless beings throughout the multi-verse that were created out of magic. So Star basically committed genocide in a sense, something else that just brings down the finale for me.

Another series in the books! It's always been a pleasure watching another great show with you Alycia! No matter what show you react to next, I'll always remain a patreon until the wheels fall off. ^_^Looking forward to the next series.

The saddest part about the finale was no princess Marco cosplay 🤗 Honestly tho this finale feels like a "we didnt get renewed afterall let's wrap this shit up somehow" situation. I don't know if that's what happened but I really hope nobody actually planned out this season exactly that way on purpose. There still were highly enjoyable moments in it but the overarching story was really lackluster. As to the wand...maybe I'm crazy but the whole time I thought it just changed appearance depending on who's holding it to me personally it never seemed like there was a prerequisite to using it. Maybe I have terrible memory and other people held it without it changing appearance or them not being able to use it but that's how I thought of it the whole time. I loved a lot of characters on this show but I'm really gonna miss my quirky queen Eclipsa 👑 she was so endearing and awesome. I think I'm gonna make a "Baby Eclipsa" T-Shirt she was so cute.

Ugh, I couldn't stand thinking about it any more. Had to go get one of those double pepp etc. pies...

Jordan

I think plain and simple is the best way to go for pizza honestly, like it holds its own without tonnes of toppings!

Jordan

Both of those pizza's sound amazing so i'm just glad you got one of them!:')

Didn't it turn into this purple black demonic wand when lobster claws picked it up? Like I said my memory is terrible but in my memory at least it changed. God damnit now I have to look it up, stupid ocd 🙄 Edit: Yup it even turns into 2 different wands one this purple black demonic eyeball thing and the other was a red wand with claws switching back and forth when he was being influenced by Ludo and Star respectively.

DarkAshtar

yeah the ending is a bit under whelming, maybe they could do another show where Tom and Janna become a couple and we get to see little Meteora and Mariposa grow up together as a side story.

When it comes to animation, there's always a bunch of moving parts. I don't claim to know every aspect of the industry, let alone one like SVTFOE. But without looking at essays, reviews, or other reactor's opinion's, I think the one flaw of this show, was not enough planning.

Anonymous

Yes, it was a good laugh here and there, but, in my opinion, the lore was only worked out halfway through, then just started to have either half baked ideas or too many to keep track of. I think there was a myriad of problems within the creative team of SVTFOE. Again, I'm just speculating, but I think Star came to prominence at a time where a lot of other cartoons were becoming "woke". Which depending on what your definition of that is, either representation of people of color, social class, social issue, or sexual orientation, it was a time for creators to push boundaries. Some did pretty well, but I think Disney, being Disney, had some push back. On what, I don't know. But I think one of the things that was pervasive was that just the writing. If you were to watch the opening credit scenes for either episodes, you'd see the different people who would write, adapt, and storyboard each episode. Now, most shows that get made, and are made today, have multiple writers. But with a show like Rick and Morty, there's only one writer per episode. But there's also a lot of leg work that gets done around the writer's table to get that one episode done. It works because there's not a lot of voice to muddle the story. Too many cooks in the kitchen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrGrOK8oZG8

With Gravity Falls, of what I remember, it was a small writing team, and Alex Hirsch was a big part of it, but again, this is just my observation. I might do a longer essay about this, but think it was just something about them having too many ideas, and little time do them in. Sort of reminds me of Dan Harmon being fired from Community after season 3. Which is considered to be the very best season. Harmon knew that he was getting fired, so he went all out with each episode. Mostly that, and how they didn't know if a fourth season, let alone a movie would be possible. In the case of Star, I think it got caught in the "shipping" aspect of the fandom. (I can hear Matty laughing from here) I felt like the ending of the series was going to show that, despite the odds, Star and Marco were going to be together. For fear of upsetting fans, not because they story needed it. Much like Steven Universe's ending, which I thought was a perfect ending, Steven Universe Future was something more along the lines of fan service. Not all that bad, but not much good either. Maybe they were hoping that they could convince the higher ups to renew for another season, and they went all out. All I can really say about this series is about is that it was fun while it lasted. All the more fun watching it with you Alycia! So, a raise a glass, and say"Another one down, another one to go!" Here's to the next series!

Anonymous

For as good as the writing could be, especially in the first couple seasons, they also made mistakes that had unfortunate consequences down the line. The most notables being the introduction of the Blood Moon followed by really horrible handling of its lore, and not resolving the love triangle at the end of season 3.

alyciadweeb

An insightful and accurate review! I love seeing how many fanfics there are that try to fix the finale 😂 It's really cool the way that fans can take things into their own hands in that way. It makes it less of a bitter pill to swallow when finales like Star *andgameofthronescoughcough* turn out to be lackluster.

alyciadweeb

Your views on the finale are very similar to mine! Although I don't think it did the show justice, my overall experience with Star was still a positive one. And even if it was in a terribly messy way, I'm glad that Star and Marco can stay together 😂

alyciadweeb

AND I LOVE ALL PIZZA lol! If I have a choice though, I usually pick between classic pepperoni OR one that's loaded up with veggies (I just can't do mushrooms because I'm allergic!)

alyciadweeb

"Underwhelming" is the perfect word for it. It just truly didn't do the rest of the series justice. BUT I am so glad that you still had a positive experience with the show overall. And it was so fun getting to experience it week to week along with you! I always looked forward to seeing your favorite quotes from each episode!

Anonymous

You're not alone, I have seen a significant number of comments likening the dissapointment for Star's ending to their disappointment for GOT's ending (I have no opinion ... I only watched the first couple of episodes because I'm a Sean Bean fan, and once I discovered his character would, um , disappear several episodes in, I didn't watch any more of it).

alyciadweeb

Oh my gosh I didn't even THINK about all of the spells! POOR SPIDER WITH A TOP HAT!!! Yeah, the entire finale was chalk-full of loopholes. It left me feeling super bummed because it really was such a great show overall.

alyciadweeb

AWWWW ZULU! This is so sweet!!! Thank you for watching along- I look forward to talking to you guys about the episodes each week!

alyciadweeb

"we didnt get renewed afterall let's wrap this shit up somehow" << LOL THIS.

alyciadweeb

And oh my gosh, I used "lackluster" to describe my feelings about the finale in an earlier comment! That is the exact word to describe how I feel about season 4, but especially the finale. Which is such a shame, because SVTFOE was such a lustrous show up until now!

alyciadweeb

Julian, this was such great review. You totally should make a full essay about it, because I think you have a lot of good points!

2023-01-15 23:07:58 So the finale... First, let me say that I also agree that it felt a bit rushed and realllly wished Disney had at least given them an hour to spend more time wrapping up loose ends. That said! I think overall it wasn't nearly as bad as the ABSOLUTE trainwreck that was the GoT series finale that actually aired the same day. I got choked up to hell and back when they were in the magic and it was falling apart. Oof, the feels...THE FEELS! As far as I know, Daron and the team knew for about half a season that they weren't going to be getting a season 5, so things were definitely..accelerated. But honestly, I love the open to interpretation ending we got. There are new challenges facing Star and Marco now as they deal with both of their worlds cleaved together. It will give everyone a chance to learn to live in peace with one another and that's kind of one of the central messages throughout the series. I've given my thoughts more than once on SvtFoE, and I have to say that I'm so glad you adore the show. I honestly think it's probably the best cartoon I've ever watched, and Star and Marco's dynamic is just so amazing, that it literally inspired me to start writing again. A lot of the "hate" for season four is from a very vocal minority as I've seen more than one pool with a large number of responses (>500) that routinely rank it above season one and while I get that taste is subjective, I feel like the hyperbole that season 4 was "bad" is way overblown. However, I'm glad you loved it, I still got misty at the Starco stuff, and I plan on continuing to give those two dorks grand adventures for a long time to come through my own works of fiction. Also, I'm very much looking forward to seeing something with fresh eyes long with you. I've had to stop myself from giving away things os many times in the comments, or listening to your theories and being like "whatttt is she talking about?" or "that's actually dead-on" haha. So now we'll get to speculate together!

I just have an image in my head of Eclipsa and Ruberiot high fiving after that barn kiss lol.

Anonymous

I personally believe we'll get a season 5. There's plenty of loose threads to pick up on, plus an Earthni series would work well for all sorts of zany adventures with an underpinning of Star, Marco, and the gang working together to make it a better place.

I honesty love pepperoni and banana peppers. Just a little bit of kick from the pickled peppers that plays so wonderfully off the savoryness pepperoni. That or the classic sausage, and peppers pizza!
