What I find awesome. Is like you said it gives you the feeling of being "lost" just like Greg and Wirt. Wirt is my fave character just because of the inner turmoil he deals with. And many fans wonder what it would have been like if Wirt had become the lantern barer? It's quite sad and tragic to think about. If you didn't pick up on it. The Unknown is like the afterlife. And the beast is sort of like the devil. While all the people and talking things we've met along the way are ghosts and spirits. Many have notice that a theme here seems to be Dante's Inferno. And that the black turtles when consumed seem to corrupt. Examples being the dog in episode one. And Auntie Whispers later on. It's a charming little story. Also if you notice all the characters save the brothers speak in old english. While Wirt and Greg make modern like phrases from the late 80s early 90s. A big hint in episode 1 that Wirt and Greg don't belong there is said by Wirt right when the appear. He freaks out because they've been walking in the woods and he doesn't know why. And he can't recall what happened before that. I love this show. Also side note you can look up Wirt's tape to Sara on youtube. It's an actual thing. Also "Over the Garden Wall" is called thus because Wirt and Greg go over the wall of a cemetary with the word Garden in the name. Also many call a graveyard a garden of the dead. And hopping a wall can symbolize going to a different plane of existence. :D
